First released in April 2024, this is a cider that has been flavoured with chocolate essence. It is produced by Three Towns and there are also skumtomte, saffron and passion fruit versions. When I was first told about this cider, I straight away presumed it would be awful. A chocolate cider sounds like a terrible idea, so of course I had to try it to find out for myself. What was most surprising though is that it wasn’t actually that bad!
This was clear golden in colour with a rapidly disappearing head. It had a thick, sugary body and a massive coconut, milk chocolate and pear aroma. These all continued into the taste, with the chocolate first encountered, which then switched into the coconut notes. The aftertaste was sticky on the lips and lasted for a considerable amount of time, with the coconut especially present along with a butter note.
This was so strange, but kind of nice at the same time. This could have been a total disaster, but I think they did a great job with balancing the sweet pear, chocolate and coconut flavours so they didn’t overpower each other. I don’t think I will ever try many more chocolate ciders in my life (for good reason) but still this wasn’t bad at all when it could have been a complete disaster!
