Beerbliotek founders Adam and Richard began home brewing in 2011, before building their own brewing and releasing their first beer in 2013. Every beer is numbered, and this was brew #126. This has been around since 2015, but these cans have been stored since 2020 (I think). As I had been ageing this cans for 4 years, I knew I wanted to put them into a special tasting, and with the name being so apt, I thought the Halloween tasting was perfect. I’m glad I did, because this was excellent.

This was pitch black in colour with a mocha head that disappeared rather quickly. It clearly had a thick body when swirled, with the beer coating the side of the glass for a long time after. The aroma was both powerful and delightful, with wafers, milk chocolate and leather all noted. The taste switched to a big roasted coffee hit, which dominated the palate long after swallowing. The thick body coated the tongue, and also left hints of leather, cereal and cacao powder. The aftertaste was extremely dry, and the alcohol leaves a residual warmth in the chest after.

This was a delightfully well-made imperial stout. The classic chocolate and roasted coffee notes were on full display, and the high alcohol gave it a warming edge. I’m glad I stored it all these years for a tasting like this, as the wait was worth it. It’s a shame I didn’t store more of these because it would have been interesting to have tried this in another 4 years and seen how well it was holding up. If you can track down a can of this, you should definitely think about buying it, as you won’t be disappointed.
