Based in Motala, Prins Katt have been producing beer since 2017 and are known for using the head brewer’s pet Sphinx cat, Sixten, as a logo. This beer has been brewed with lactose, blueberries and vanilla along with rolled oats for extra body and mouthfeel. I had decided that I wanted a traditional English dessert as a food pairing in the tasting, so I was searching for a beer that could balance the sweetness of the jelly, custard and cream that makes up the dessert. This beer seemed to match the description perfectly, so it went straight into the tasting.
This was maroon to orange with hardly any head forming, with the beer showing both medium body and carbonation. A massive blueberry aroma exploding from the glass, with both the juice and leaves present. Cereal, pastry, vanilla and raspberry were all also noted and all combined to create a pleasant and striking acidic aroma. The sourness was surprisingly intense, with the acidic blueberry dominating the palate coupled with a big fresh lime juice note. The vanilla continued riding the big, blue fruit notes and did well not to get lost. The pie crust note came through in the aftertaste, but it left the throat feeling rather rough.
I liked this, but I don’t know if I could drink a whole can. The citrus acidity is quite potent and almost too much for me to drink a lot of. The trifle sweetness helped to bring down the intense sourness, balancing both the acidity and fruit notes. If you like your sour beers with an extra kick, then this might be the one for you!
