So I always sample the beers that I will be having in a tasting a few days before to check for faults and to help get a better understanding of ever beer. It is much harder to do a tasting when you don’t know what the beers taste like beforehand naturally. Originally I had an Octoberfest lager in the “yellow beer” slot in this rainbow tasting, however as I tried it I realised it was a lot darker than I thought it would be. To compensate, I removed the lager and bought in Hoegaarden instead. I know Hoegaarden very well as I drink it regularly and the colour was must better fit for the “yellow” slot in the tasting than the amber coloured lager. Even though I knew most people would have tried it before, I still wanted it in the tasting as it is such a well made beer.
As I have mentioned already, the beer was straw yellow in colour, with a good, effervescent body that built and held its soapy white head well. The aroma is such a classic, with the sweet wheat, ripe banana and minor citrus notes rising from the glass and swirling majestically together. Upon tasting, the bubbles are instantly noticed, hitting the tongue with champagne like vigour. The wheat initially hits, followed by the smooth lemon, orange and spices that are so light. The aftertaste is short, but just begs for another sip straight away as it leaves the mouth feeling so fresh.
As you can see, I love Hoegaarden. This has been one of my “go to” beers for years and there’s nothing like getting a cold Hoegaarden to enjoy. If you’ve never tried this, just go a buy a bottle. You wont regret it. For me though, I think I will be drinking this for many years to come. Excellent.
