The tasting before this one at the start of October was the pride event, where I tried a variety of different coloured beers that corresponded to the colours of the gay pride rainbow. For the red beer I took “How to Tear Down this Wall”, a raspberry berliner weisse by This Is How Brewing. I was so impressed by that beers freshness I decide to include another one of their beers into a tasting. As they hail from Piteå, this seemed like the perfect fit for the night. I had heard a lot about this beer so I wanted to give it a go, but unfortunately it just wasn’t a patch on its raspberry brother.
This beer poured with a very light gold colour with minimal cloud. A pretty non existent head formed then dissipated quickly. On the nose it was reminiscent of a tropical juice vitamin drink mixed with some sweet malt. The taste was sour pineapple, guava and orange peel with a surprising amount of bitterness for a blonde ale. I was expecting a more mellow character. The aftertaste was really quite fresh and the bitterness continued on for a while.
I feel like I have been a bit unfair on this beer as I’ve tried it twice now and both times I tried it without food. It has been designed to be enjoyed with burgers in the Bastard Burger chain, hence the name of the beer. I think that pairing this with a nice fatty cheeseburger would be a lovely combination, with the fruity hops and the meat working well. On it’s own it was ok, but I don’t think it will become a favourite anytime soon. I will reserve my final judgement though until I have a cold one of these in one hand and a nice juicy burger in the other.
