It is so strange when a brewery makes a beer and then does little or no promotion for it. Sometimes there is no information about it on the website or indeed any site for that matter. Social media posts are usually small in quantity too, if they exist at all. It isn’t the first time I’ve been in this situation with a beer and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I bought in the Blackened Ale as I wanted a black IPA in the tasting and the Odd Island beers I’ve tried before have been consistently well-made. It does make it hard to talk about a beer in depth though when there is virtually no information about said beer available anywhere!
The beer was dark chestnut brown with a beige head that held fairly well. It seemed to be towards the lower end of the carbonation scale but the colour of the beer made viewing quite difficult. The aroma was pleasant yet light. Lightly toasted malts came through first along with a little tropical note and crackers. The taste was, honestly quite average. If you’ve tried a least a couple of IPA in your life you have already tasted this. Dark syrup bread, biscuit and little hints of grapefruit and pine came through with each sip. This was medium body with a small amount of lacing and an aftertaste with was fairly light.
This was quite boring. I’ve had a lot better black IPA I can’t say that this beer sticks in the memory particularly well. For the price, you can get cheaper and better. I feel like this doesn’t really represent the level of brewing which I have grown to expect from Odd Island. It might be a good thing that this hardly had any presence online as I don’t think it will be missed when discontinued.
