Westerbotten Bryggeri began in 2014 and is based in Sävar. This is their brand-new beer, which is soon released in Systembolaget. It has been brewed with East Kent Golding and Hallertau hops. Saison (or season in French) is a 19th Century type of pale farmhouse ale that is usually highly carbonated and often bottle conditioned, closely linked to the Belgian city of Liège. They are often spiced with orange, coriander or ginger. As one of our great local breweries we have here in Umeå, I was so happy when they said they would return for the third time to our charity tasting!
This was slightly hazy golden in colour with a massive bubble bath style white foamy head. The spices came through at the forefront in the aroma, with nutmeg, coriander seeds and a light dankness all present. The aroma was light, fragrant and enjoyable! Cloves hits the tongue first when tasting, with light malts, banana, orange, straw and herbs wrapped in a medium to thin body. It seemed to be well carbonated, with an aftertaste that rather short. It did leave a dry bitterness on the back of the tongue, which was pleasant and invigorating.
I think this might be one of my favourite beers that Weedterbotten bryggeri has produced. A nice, easy to drink saison that would be great in the sunshine, with its pleasant fruity esters balancing the hay like malts well. Delicious!
