So I really didn’t expect to have two spirits in this tasting, but that’s just the way it turned out! When I found the KISS rum was available in Systembolaget, I was a bit worried, as a lot of drinks with band affiliation are just awful. I know that the Motörhead rum is superb though, after having it in a previous tasting, so I decided to give this a go, and I’m glad that I did! This rum was blended with rums that have been aged between 8 and 15 years and is made in a Spanish style due to being blended in the Dominican Republic. Kiss were founded in 1979 in New York and are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, selling over 75 million records. Known for their face paint, blood spitting and pyrotechnics, the band will conclude their farewell tour in New York in December 2023.
This was dark copper in colour, with a robust aroma of brown sugar and alcohol. You can definitely smell the 45% and cleaned the sinuses when taking a deep breath of this! The taste was much smoother than the aroma and was an extremely easy rum to sip. There were some lovely oaky hints mixed into the flavour, but they never overpowered the brown syrup notes. The oily body of the rum covered the lips, the 45% really warmed the chest well when you took a big sip.
I thought that was amazing. It would have been very easy to slap a KISS logo on any shit rum, and it would have still sold, but they released a quality product here. This is definitely worth checking out if you find a bottle on the shelf of your local rock pub. It’s like a hug in liquid form!
