Gotlands Bryggeri was founded in 1995 and is known as one of the first craft beer breweries in Sweden. The brewery is owned by Spendrups, with the VD of the brewery being Johan Spendrup. Best known for their “Bulldog” series of beers, Gotlands Bryggeri is well known across Sweden. This beer is ecological and brewed in the German style of wheat beer. After trying this at the first ever Umeå Beer Festival, I thought it would be a great fit to start off the tasting. This beer was paired with goats cheese cream.
This was a dark gold colour with noticeable haze and topped with a thick, white foam that lingered. It was noted that it had medium to high carbonation. The aroma was the classic pairing of fruity overripe banana peel and cloves that gave a spicy edge. It had a rather sweet note that was slightly higher than most wheat beers I’ve tried. Upon tasting, it had a lovely silky mouthfeel and coated the palate well with its thick body. The taste continued the aroma profile, with the banana and spices at the forefront, backed up with some straw and a hint of digestive. The aftertaste was fairly short, but as the body was so thick, it coated the palate rather well.
This was a well-made wheat beer that is rather indicative of the style. Easy to drink and well-balanced, this beer might not be the best in its class, but it’s very well-made and definitely worth checking out.
