Stigbergets is based in Gothenburg and started in 2013 with the aim of making mainly lager for its own tavern Kino at Hagabion. They expanded the brewery after outgrowing its original premises, and in 2018 they built another brewery in Partihallarna in Gothenburg. They currently have 2 bars, one in the old brewery premises of Stigberget and one in Stockholm. This is a collaboration with English Beak Brewery. This was produced using oats, wheat, rye and hopped with high levels of Citra and dry hopped with Riwaka, Wai-iti and Citra Cryo. Of course, I had to have at least one DIPA in the tasting, as it is such an important and liked style in the craft beer scene. With Stigbergets producing it, it was always going to be great!
This had a cloudy citrus colour when poured, producing a light and fluffy white head that held well. The aroma was an impressive blend of grapefruit, pineapple and pine. The taste was more of the same, with those big grapefruit peel notes at the forefront, followed by hints of pine, fresh grass and pineapple. The body was thick and juicy, with the carbonation rather high, which filled the palate. The aftertaste was rather long, with the citrus peel notes slowly fading over time.
This was a very nice, full-bodied DIPA that is a great example of the style. Big, bold aromas and flavours helped showcase the amazing hops, with the malts heavy enough to keep everything balanced. Although I don’t think I could drink many of these, this would be a great beer to throw into a session. Delicious!
