The founders of the brewery began making beers when they were 15, as they were unable to get hold of beer after their rowing training sessions. After 8 years of practice and study, they opened their own brewery. They are named after the silver carp, the very fat fish roaming the rivers and lakes of Europe. Its shape resembles the body of one of the brewers after he quit rowing. This is brewed with a large amount of oats in the grain bill for extra body, and then hopped with Citra and Mosaic. I had never heard of this brewery before I began researching beers for this tasting, but it’s always fun finding new breweries from unexpected countries.

This was a pale golden colour with an impressive white bubble bath head that was very lively at the beginning. Medium carbonation was noted at the sides of the glass, and the body appeared to be standard for the style. The aroma was pleasant, with grapefruit, mandarin, lemon and lychee all found. These all followed into the taste, with the grapefruit peel hitting the palate first, closely followed by honeydew melon and a good hit of fresh grass. Even with a higher than average alcohol for the style, it was still extremely easy to drink. The aftertaste was rather short but left a good fruity hit that refreshed the mouth.

Light, fruity and well-balanced, this is an impressive modern APA that I enjoyed a lot. I would love to pair this with some different cheeses to see how the hop profile changes with the creamy and nutty character of a well aged cheddar. A delicious addition to the tasting, and I hope to be trying some more of their range soon!
