Rochefort are one of the most well known Trappist breweries in the world. The earliest mention of a brewery at the site was recorded in 1595, but this brewery has been running since 1899. They have built up a reputation as a producer of quality beers, and export to numerous countries around the world. As I was having a Belgian and Trappist beer tasting, I knew I had to have at least 1 Rochefort beer in the selection. After looking at the other beers I had already bought, I went for the Triple Extra and of course I wasn’t disappointed.
This was medium straw in colour with a hint of cloud, accompanied by a rather light hued head. The beer had an almost champagne type aroma, with delicate notes of orange, apricot and almond all noted. The taste was sweet, with tangerine and Belgian yeast being the first tones to hit the tongue. These were coupled with spices, white bread and a small floral note to deliver an amazingly complex flavour. It had a rather short aftertaste, which left fresh wheat and yeast notes on the palate.
I mean, what is there to dislike about this beer? It’s just a world-class tripel style beer, with a deep and rich flavour profile. If you want to start delving into the world of Trappist beer, this is one of the best places you could choose to start.
