Remmarlöv are based on a farm in Skåne and have been brewing since 2014. They are quite consistent at releasing new beers, with over 30 different products currently available on the market. I have tried around 4 or 5 of their beers before and I knew I was happy from past experiences so I thought this would be a good time to try their Imperial stout. I needed an imperial stout in this tasting as I had some lovely rich blue cheese to enjoy with it, as the deep roasted notes of the beer work perfectly with the salty, strong cheese. Like most of the beers in this tasting, I was very happy with not just the beer but also with the cheese pairing too.
This was unsurprisingly deep brown to black in colour and seemed to be quite thin when first poured. The slightly off-white head disappeared quickly, hinting at a low level of carbonation (which is perfect for this style of beer in my opinion). The aroma was quite mild, with gentle and inoffensive milk chocolate, café latte and cream notes. These followed through into the taste, with a surprising amount of sweetness. A lot of milk chocolate came through upon sipping, with the coffee notes taking a back seat to sweet licorice and brown sugar. The aftertaste was short but pleasant, with the high alcohol content well hidden. The sharp blue cheese really cut through some of the rich sweetness, and the balance was excellent when they were combined.
I was not expecting this beer to have such a heavy emphasis on the sweet chocolate notes as it did. Most imperial stouts that I have tried that are 10% have a much larger coffee presence to them, but once I settled into it I grew to really enjoy this. The combination with blue cheese only helped to emphasize the rich notes of both, and became a match made in heaven. For the price, you can’t really go wrong with this either. A very sturdy and pleasant imperial stout.
