Bryggeriet I Umeå is the newest brewery in town, starting out in 2019. With a focus on lager, their products are available mainly around the local region. This is the first charity tasting that this brewery has been a part of. The DIPA style was first produced in 1994 in California, USA and is synonymous with the big, bold and fruity flavours that you expect with a lot of modern day American IPA. This DIPA won gold at Nolia Beer 2022 and I really enjoyed it during the competition, so I knew this was the beer that I wanted in the tasting from these guys.
This was amber coloured with a medium off-white head. Pleasant caramel, moss and peach notes were all found in the medium strength aroma. Upon sipping, the dried pineapple and brown sugar complimented the big orange zest hits well. The body was thick and coated the entire palate with each sip. The alcohol was well hidden, except for a slight warmth that was detected in the chest. The bitterness was long-lasting and left a bitter, herbal note on the tongue.
I thought this was a well-made DIPA. The body, aroma and taste were all in point, and I think this is the best beer that they have in their current range. With a robust taste and fruity aroma, I can understand why this won an award last year!
