Blackta Brygghus was formed after the owners bought equipment from a defunct test brewery. None of the owners had brewed a beer before but after much experimenting and testing over a few years and 1000 litres of beer, they launched their Sörmlands session IPA in 2018. They are based in between Stockholm and Örebro and currently have 7 different products available in Systembolaget. Left over products from the brewing process are used to feed animals on their farm, such as the wild turkeys. This was the first time I had tried one of their beers and I thought it would be perfect to pair with the elderflower and lemon notes in the Dogpoint Sauvignon Blanc that Hanna had picked to partner it. I won’t be writing reviews of the wine however as I don’t feel as well versed in the wine world to give comment.
This had a very dull copper colour with a massive haze, coupled with a big white foam head that hung around for a long, long time. The lemon and elderflower notes came through nicely in the aroma along with hints of moss, yeast and herbs. The taste was a bit underwhelming and watery, but what was there was pleasant. Lemon peel combines with a light earthy dankness to give a refreshing yet dry mouthfeel. There was a little farmyard funk too there, but it suits the style of the beer well. There was a herbal aftertaste that came through, with a big focus on coriander seeds.
I thought this was pretty average if I have to be honest. They did nail the elderflower and lemon, but it was a bit too light in taste to really get the senses going. I think they also need to re-evaluate the choice of font they use on their bottle as it was a real struggle to read the information on there. I could try some more products from this brewery, but I wouldn’t race to do so.
