Weltenburg Klosterbrauerei was founded as early as 1050. The brewery is located in Weltenburg monastery in Bavaria, southern Germany. The monastery was founded by Scottish monks in the 6th century and is today owned by the Benedictine order. Malt: barley, caramel, color. Hops: Pearl. If I’m honest I had never heard of this brewery before I started looking into beers for this tasting. Although I enjoyed this, it didn’t reach a level of excellence to me.
This was chocolate brown to ruby in colour, with a thin off white head that didn’t hang around for long. Rye bread notes came through first in the aroma along with toffee, milk chocolate and treacle. These formed a sweet but amazing aroma. The taste was complex, with the sweet dark notes hitting the tongue along with raisins, toffee and hints of metal. The body was a bit too thin for my liking, which was the main negative I found. The aftertaste was drying and left again a dark bread note at the back of the mouth.
This was good, but if I’m honest it didn’t blow me away. I thought it lacked body with didn’t help the overall balance of the taste on the palate. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this but I’ve had better dark lagers. It is worth a look though if you’re curious.
