Brewdog was founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie and has grown in epic proportions since its inception. It now produces 2.2 million bottles a month and has quickly become a major player in the world craft beer scene. The brewery was a once taken to court by the British drink industry watchdog Portman Group for their Dead Pony label. It was said the phrase “rip it up down empty streets” that was printed on the bottle would lead to antisocial behaviour. Brewdog mocked the ruling and apologised in their own way by saying they “didn’t give a shit” about the ruling. Eventually Brewdog won the case but were so angry with the original court case they came out with a beer called Speedball so “they would have something worth banning us for”. You have to admire the balls and attitude of these guys. I thought it was only right to include one of their beers in the March beer tasting after showing such Churchill levels of attitude.

The beer was nearly completely black with a nice tan head that held well. Little to no carbonation but with this style of ber you wouldn’t be expecting prosecco like effervescence. It felt a bit thin when it was decanted into the glass. I do look for a nice good body to my stout and I thought this one was slightly lacking. Light roasted coffee, smooth milk chocolate and toffee were all noted in the aroma. It was overpowering but what it had was pleasant. The taste was dark chocolate, roasted coffee grounds and a small hint of sweet licorice that swirled together on the tongue with a surprising lightness. The creaminess of the milk stout came through in the end and continued after the swallowing.

In my humble opinion it was a nice stout but I wanted more. I like a stout to be rather heavy with big powerful flavours coupled with a lovely thick body. I felt like this beer was too light and didn’t really excite me that much quite honestly. It was an OK milk stout but when you compare it to something like the Terrapin Moo-Hoo milk stout it does feel rather ordinary.
